Re: OT: Bois d'Arc (getting way off topic)

The fruit of Osage orange has also been used to repel cock roaches.
There was a story about it in the Wall Street Journal about 5 years ago.
It seems that some industrious entrepreneur was selling them on
Manhattan for an outrageous price and his customers were satisfied.

The wood of this tree is one of the densest woods native to North
America. It does not float. Its resistance to rot and its tendency to
grow crooked drew the attention of a friend of mine, ashipbuilder here
on Delmarva. He is now overseeing the construction of a replica of a
colonial ship the "Sultana", using osage for the framing. To his
knowledge, this is the first time that Osage has been used in ship
building.

If you would like to see photos of the framing, go to

It's a long project. I was at the shipyard today. The planking (oak) is
on the sides, but not the bottom. It's really neat to watch the
progress.

Of more importance, the Japanese irises are starting to bloom. I have
over 20 cultivars open now. I'll be doing some crosses before work in
the morning.
