Not that I am aware. Notwithstanding it has a very lovely melody, the lyrics
of the traditional one render it unacceptable since it is sung as if from the
mouth of a nostalgic slave. The country music star and sausage king Jimmy
Dean saw fit to move to the Commonwealth several years back and he and his
ladywife have written something they are trying to cram down everyone's
throats, but it is pretty awful and one trusts they will not prevail. There
are some other candidates floating around, also awful in a sugary, limp, sort
of way. Moi, I'm hoping someone will channel the shade of that most elegant
of blowhards, Patrick Henry, and put stirring new lyrics to the tune of
"Wreck of Old 97." Now that would be appropriate both for seasonal pigroasts
and also opening sessions of the Legislature.
