I haven't been able to locate Bill Shear's post on encouraging
(bloomout) rhizomes to throw increases, but I did find enough to
remember what the sense of it was.
Along the side of each rhizome (at each leaf axil I think) is a nacent
increase point. They are kept dormant by a hormone (or some other
substance) produced by the active growing point.
So a possible action to recover a bloomout is to cut back the main stalk
being sure to take off the growth point, let the cut dry for a day or
two and plant deeply in a pot. It is also hypothesized that sunlight
retards the growth of these new increases, which is the reason to bury
them deeper than usual. I think I wouldalso shave the roots in this case.
There is an article in one of the AIS bulletins from the early '90s
about burying bloomout rzs in sand. I can't recall which issue at the
moment. (Is this a reason to encourage the Bulletin Indexing project?
Are there additional volunteers?)
I haven't had enought experience with it yet, but I also think you can
take the rz and split it lengthwise (on the vertical plane) to get more increases.
