the dirt? or am I doing something wrong? and just got lucky this year?"
Maybe the iris are unhappy with all the salt in the sand, although they are
pretty hardy. Maybe you get too much fog (not enough sun) during the
spring blooming season. Possibly the sand is lacking nutrients, and needs
organic amendments. Maybe it drains too well, and cannot retain enough
moisture (again, organic amendments). As far as (someone else's reply
expressed concerns) the lack of a winter freeze goes, I wouldn't be too
concerned with tall bearded iris or louisianas; some TB's certainly do need
a winter freeze to trigger bloom or increase, but many do not. In
particular, try some California-bred iris such as rebloomers from the late
Monty Byers. Many of the most vigorous iris such as rebloomers ignore
seasons to a large extent, and just increase and bloom whenever the weather
is right. In my limited experience (I don't waste time when I don't get
results), most dwarf bearded iris do need a winter freeze for optimum
performance; certain rebloomers such as PLUM WINE are notable exceptions.
Not much of a concrete answer, but maybe I've been some help?
