John, your point is well taken in that rebloom in colder climates is to be
expected from irises that could be termed everblooming. The catch is that
irises that are everbloomers in California often will not rebloom at all in colder
climates. In fact, I waited 3 full seasons, both spring and fall and NEVER got
bloom one on Porcelain Frills! Using that theory with colder climate
rebloomers might work.
Most of the California rebloomers don't rebloom here without a lot of extra
care, some not then. The only ones that do so on a fairly regular basis are
Hager's FEEDBACK and several of Monty B's.
When I first got into this I found that I could get rebloom on some of them
by putting them in new ground and watering like crazy. That's how I saw rebloom
on MY VALENTINE (anyone still have it?), GALLANT MOMENT (I used), BEVERLY
SILLS and others. I thought VICTORIA FALLS was in this category until I saw it
bloom three falls in a row at our public display garden.
I bought INNOCENT STAR at introduction, and it blooms reliably when some
others don't, but it's not rebloomed for me. I crossed it with my irises that DO
rebloom here. Two of it's children have rebloomed for me, but it's way too
soon to know if they will be consistent in this region. (or pretty enough!)
I've had bloom on DD for two springs. It's good to know that it reblooms so
well in CA because I used it both ways this year, with success. Last year it
wouldn't set pods either way.
Betty W. in South-central KY zone 6 . . . still envies those who live on the
coasts and have such lavish rebloom.
