I have been told that late frosts can cause irises to bloom lower than usual including down in the leaves.

Hello, my tall bearded Iris have bloomed at half the height I'm used to. In most cases the blooms are below the foliage. I am in Long Island, NY. We had an average winter and a colder than average spring. Can anyone shed light on my problem? I'm a little discouraged as I did want to expand my Iris varieties.
