Regarding the Membership fees for AIS:
My personal feeling is that the dues are very reasonable. Most
organizations that I am aware of charge far more. I must pay AT LEAST
$75 per year for a technical society membership. I feel like I get my
money's worth from AIS and I really enjoy the bulletin, particularly the
last few issues. I see nothing to apologize for. The bulletin is the
primary membership benefit for our money and we get all four issues for
our $18 regardless of when we join in the year. If a new member waits
until the following year, they miss out on a whole year of bulletins.
This is NOT what I would want to do...
However I realize that not everyone sees it the way I do. So what
about offering new members signing up after the middle of the year a
half price membership with only two bulletins, keeping the option of
paying full price and receiving four? If we did this for awhile and
kept track of the new memberships we could find out what attracts new
members to AIS. If a significant number of people take up this offer
then we know it is an important change and we keep the partial year
membership structure for new members. If only few people take up the
offer, then we can safely go back to doing things the old way. Anyone
who would join for half a year is not so interested in the bulletin as
he/she is in other membership benefits.
Another alternative is to cut the membership price to new members and
still send out all four bulletins. I feel that the bulletin is worth
every penny I pay for it, and furthermore, it is expensive to publish.
Can we afford to sell discounted memberships?
Hooray for the AIS bulletin!
