Ken had to have had an appreciation of history. Of course, he lived on Staten
Island, in the borough of Richmond (also county) which went Indian-->
Dutch--> English--> American and whether or not he lived close to the old
Dutch town at the heart of Richmond is anyones' guess.>>
All of which reminds one of the Episcopal Bishop in this neck of the woods
(Richmond, Virginia, otherwise "Richmond on the James") one Peter J. Lee,
who, to allay confusion with a prominent family, refers to himself as "one of
the Ellis Island Lees."
There was an iris almost certainly named for Richmond, Virginia, due south of
Washington DC, (Virginia named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England,
as I'm sure all are aware). It was RICHMOND, named by Bertrand Farr but
apparently never described nor introduced. My theory is that it was named in
acknowledgement of Richmond's role as an early promoter of the iris, which
was named City Flower in 1921, but possibly lost in the shuffle after his
death in 1924. Farr was a frequent visitor and judged several AIS shows here
in this period. I don't believe the registration system was advanced enough
at that point for him to have 'registered' the name with the intent to use it
on a suitable seedling later. In the thirties the name was used for a JI,
about which I know little.
