RE: AIS: Topics for Affiliates Meeting in Dallas?

From: "J.F. Hensler" <christyh@povn.com>

I'm afraid I agree with Ellen. An overly long drive to attend a meeting
just isn't my idea of fun. The closest chapters (to me) listed on the AIS
homepage are in Walla Walla and Yakima. I'm not able to drive at night so
we're talking about a minimum 2 day commitment just to attend a meeting.

I have heard there are 2 iris groups in Spokane. I understand from a friend
who is a member that one of them meets once a month in the evening. I have
no idea where.

As far as volunteering goes (since I can't be there in person), I've
volunteered artwork, photos, seeds, and plants but in 3 years have heard
nothing. Since the only contact I have is the one person, I also have no
idea whether she simply forgot to pass along the information to the group
or if these things aren't needed.

The biggest problem in this area is the lack of information. If these iris
groups really do exist, and are looking for new members, it makes no sense
that they wouldn't try to get the word out. A listing with the local
extension offices, growers, other garden groups, or encouraging the local
garden columnist to mention their activities would be a start. The ideal
would be a listing on the AIS homepage with an email address for
information or working home site showing a schedule of events.

If you want new members (and new volunteers) I'd suggest making attending
events as easy as possible. No one is going to show up if they don't know
you're there.
