RE: AIS: Topics for Affiliates Meeting in Dallas?

I'd like to recount a personal experience that relates to building a good
organization.  First, let me say that I disagree with Anner when she says
that the leaders should be expected only to work the levers and dials and
not provide inspiration.  A leader's example and energy sets the tone for
the group.

That is certainly the case in central Virginia, with our president, Mike
Lockatell.  Mike is a ball of fire!

This past Saturday, a large horticultural concern in Richmond held a
Gardener's Fair, and many plant clubs in the area were invited to
participate.  The iris kiosk was far above the others, thanks to Mike and
two or three other members (Van and Dave, for example, whose last names
have slipped the bonds of memory) who set up a triptych display with photos
from Schreiner's, and who had a wide variety of handouts available for
passersby.  Mike also took the lead in talking to people and greeting the
masses, and I know his enthusiasm brought us at least a couple of new
members.  Mike also arranged for me to do a book signing, urged the
proprietor to advertise it (which he did, on both the radio and
newspapers), and set that up too.  I got to talk with a number of new iris
enthusiasts.  So we were definitely a presence and it was due to more than
just "keeping the records" etc.

So---when it comes time to nominate a president, consider energy,
dedication and enthusiasm as prime qualifiers.
