Speaking from a usda region 4 viewpoint there is an
easy way to protect irises from "late" frosts, and it
does not cost one cent.
Save those paper grocery bags, and on those occasions
when "late" frosts do occur place the paper grocery
bag over the iris plant, and anchor it in some
fashion.
Also find that "mild" overnight frosts ( 28 - 32 ) do
no harm to the plant, provided daytime temperatures
are above freezing. Anything below 28 degrees is
something to be concerned about and believe it or not,
simply placing the paper grocery bag over the plant
will increase the temperature within the
microenvironment nearly 15 degrees.
