On iris-photos, there is a question about Japanese irises 'balling
up.' This happens with multi-falled varieties in our heat and
humidity later in the season. The bud doesn't open fully and the
petals get stuck together and the bud stays rounded like an orange.
They never ever open but stay in that stage and eventually fall
over. Nine and twelve-falled flowers never even get to the balled
stage. They just don't open at all and stay pointed with the petals
stuck together. So, where I live I grow the early three-falled
varieties plus all of the seedlings out of Springtime Snow x Hatsu
Kagami. These usually bloom in late May or early June before the
muggy weather arrives.
