The suggestion that was made concerning painting the dandelion leaves with
Roundup is the one I use also, but I always use a small foam brush rather than
one with bristles.  Splashing onto the iris leaves is not the problem it can
be if one uses a bristle brush.  I have neighbors who never do anything about
their dandelions so I have to use this every year, but it does work.  I've
never had any problem with Roundup getting onto the iris.
