Neil,
     I don't know when the root growth would max out here either.  It was 
that standard pattern I was thinking of.  I have several pots of Iris albicans, 
so I could maybe do one right after bloom, wait a week and do another, and so 
on...  I may try this.  What I don't want is to accidentally destroy my Irises.
