There is only one modern comprehensive book: Clive Innes - The World of
Iridaceae: ISBN 0 948326 01 9. Published in 1985 and whether still in
print I do not know.

this is not helped by the common referrence to various South African
plants as "African iris'. Think too of the Colchicums and Sterbergias
which are often erroneously referred to as 'autumn crocus'. It's a case
of 'all eels are fishes but not all fishes are eels.' The genus Iris,
while being arguably the most important member, is but one of many genera
in the Iridaceous family, all technically of equal generic rank. If you
rephrase your statement to 'members of the IRID (short for 'Iridaceous')
family' the question becomes unnecessary in the context of IRIS shows.
