A year or two ago there was some good stuff on this topic in the Bulletin.

Start with what triggers normal bloom in a large/mature-enough oncer
(oversimplified): a certain amount of winter chilling followed by the longer and
warmer days of spring.

(Still oversimplified) A rebloomer is then a vigorous grower that has lost the
need for one or both of the triggers. A summer or fall rebloomer has lost the
need for winter, and a winter rebloomer has lost the need for spring. An
everbloomer has lost both.
