James -- The phenomenon you describe has hit several of my varietes, both
seedlings and named varieties, both SDB and TB. A friend's garden a few
miles away has the same problem. This is the first year I have seen it on
more than one or two plants (in 25 years). My opinion is that it is a
result of the weather -- too much growth with more than average rainfall,
followed by broiling hot temps. I don't think there's any disease or
critter involved.
