Linda, I've never found it to be difficult. I buy a smallish notebook (9 1/1
X 6 Inches), draw a line through each page. Let's say my cross today is
Seedling # 9525-1Re X 9526-1Re. I reach into my bag of tags and pull one
out. For the sake of this illustration let's say I pulled out # 40. I tie
the tag on the pod parent, write the number on 1/2 page of the book. I list
9525-1Re X 9526-1Re, then I note which bloom/blooms got the pollen. PT
stands for primary terminal and ST would mean secondary terminal. (This
nearly eliminates the chance of bee pods, which are rare anyway, from being
included in the final harvest.) Then weather & conditions-Hot & dry would
mean the temp is over 75 or so and the blooms are dry/drying. These notes
amuse me when I try to determine the conditions which did or did not produce
seed.

In the busiest days of making crosses, I often list only the first stage
which is the names of both the pod parent and the pollen parent. I'm simply
so involved that I forget the rest.

If the tag should disappear, I still have the details in my book by looking
up the pod parent. I carry the notebook with me when I go out to check for
pods, progress, etc..
A simple check mark or X in the corner tells me the results of each cross.

I write "Field Book 2001" (whatever) across the front to identify it. Or you
can color code--mine are orange so they show up well if I leave one in the
garden--but I've got a lot of orange notebooks now and something is needed on
the front.

For me, it simplifies.
