Two years ago (my first year hybridizing) I used index cards cut up
into smaller squares with the cross written in ballpoint pen (i.e.
"Thornbird x Satan's Mistress"). Let's just say that was a disaster!
Eight weeks of sun & rain (not to mention the biting, chewing, and
web-spinning bugs) rendered half of the tags incomprehensible.

Last year I tried the idea of the plastic mini-blinds with a number
written with a Sharpie (permanent) marker, then recording the
information in a notebook. Those worked great, and didn't fade at
all. I already started using them again this year. (You've probably
seen them in some photos I've posted to Iris-Photos.)
