Lenora,

Your iris foliage will not die back in the same way that tulips and daffodils 
do.  It will remain green and growing, in most situations, until cold weather 
stops it in the fall.  This depends on where you live, of course.  Many 
things can be used as companion plants.  I use a mixture of other perennials 
which include daylilies, dwarf dahlias and mums.  I've recently discovered 
coroposis and like these in some places, depending on the situation and 
location.
