Re: TB: CULT: up and down weather & late freezes

A TB that performed amazingly well here this year despite heavy rains and
heavier winds is Moonlit Lace. This flower resembles Rhonda Flemming (which
grows beside it) in that it is a demure white ground with lilac plicata and
is lacy. It is hybridized by Connell Marsh from Nebraska, and he sent it to
me as an extra when I ordered his then new IB, Constant Companion (a
reblooming star!). Moonlit Lace grew well right from the start and won a
blue ribbon for my daughter the year after planting. This year it was the
tallest (and sturdiest) thing in the garden with outstanding branching and
big, beautiful flowers. It was impossible to exhibit in a regular wine
bottle, so my daughter placed it in an apple juice bottle! Still, it had an
extra low branch and was hard to position, which must be why it only won a
blue and was not considered for Queen. The story would have been much
different if garden judging was going on, for this magnificent clump stood
like a flagpole through all weathers and it was a minimum of 44" anywhere
you looked. Every stalk show branched, every huge flower perfectly spaced.
It doesn't look like it has starchy substance, but each flower lasted three
days and didn't have tears or twists, big as they were. Weather has never
had any effect on this variety whatsoever; try it! It is probably the best
overall spring blooming plicata we grow.
