>Unfortunately, our seed set on
Andromache shriveled to nothing, and all of the pods we got with its pollen
are very small. But, we were told to expect that, because it is a diploid.
We are really hoping for a few viable seeds from it. Thank all of you on
this list who did so much to help Stephanie with her hybridizing efforts
this year, with advise, pollen and plants!<

The secret to success with small pods from wide crosses is to harvest them
when they turn brown [they may not split on their own] and culture the
seeds immediately. Seeds are often small, and not viable if dried and
planted the usual way. [One reason wide crosses are often deemed futile.]
A seed that has a viable embyo but insufficient endosperm can be saved if
processed when fresh, either by embryo culture or enhanced germination
techniques.

Please see the archives for more information on this.
