Hi Robin,
Such a list would be useful, especially if it were maintained to ensure that
the information was current. Some presenters take a year or so off from
traveling, while at other times they may be eager to get out as often as
possible.
The fees are always a tricky thing. So many variables...
Many times if a speaker is local to the club they are presenting to, then
they may not even charge a fee ( a nice gift plant is always nice to offer).
Speakers that must travel a distance may wish to have their travel (gas or
flight ticket), accommodations, and meals covered. A club with strong
financial resources may also wish to offer an honorarium.
If the speaker is coming to a larger event such as a Regional or National
meeting, then also including convention fees would be appropriate.
Often times a speaker will bring plants for the club to auction to members
to help offset the expenses of the speaker's fees.
Good communication between the guest speaker and club representative is
vital so that everyone is happy and goodwill prevails.
If a list of speakers is being organized then it would also be great to
include descriptions of the talks available by the presenter. Some
hybridizers may only talk about their own plants, while others may have
various educational programs to give.
Make sure you also know what equipment is necessary for the presentation and
that the club and speaker each know what is expected of each other. Often
times the club will provide a projector. Usually a screen is provided by
the club. If it is a digital presentation, then determine who will provide
the digital projector, but also ask the presenter to bring slides in the
event that his laptop and the projector do not interface well. I have
witnessed situations where the projectors and computers did not co-operate
and so I am investing in a personal projector this winter for my laptop so
as not to experience such situations when I travel.
If a speaker does a great job at a club or event then it would also be
appropriate to mention their presentation in a forum such as Iris-Talk. No
need to mention a presenter with weaker skills in a public forum.
These are some of the first thoughts I have concerning your query.
We have eight different irises in bloom today in our central North Carolina
garden.
Have a great day,
Bobby
