There are some potential problems with using combination searches if you
are trying to find iris names in pedigrees, but here are some tips that
might help narrow pedigree searches down a bit.
To search for <yes>, try entering <(blyth AND yes)>, which gives 20 some
entries, or <yes AND tb)> which gives 36 entries, or <(blyth AND yes AND
tb)> which only gives 4. <(space)yes(space)> only gives three entries
(but one of those isn't YES - not sure why). <Yes(space)> doesn't avoid
all the <eyes> entries.
To search for the word <love> by itself, try entering love with a space
on one or both sides of the word. A space on both sides gives only 169
hits instead of 400+.
Adding a space to either or both sides of the word will potentially
eliminate entries that are next to a punctuation mark with no space
between, so that won't always work to get where you want to go. i.e.,
ALPINE JOURNEY....Tranquil Star X (Love Chant x Festive Skirt).
The search engine uses parentheses as part of boolean logic, so you
can't search for the characters ( or ). Seems like Chris told me a way
around that (i.e., a way to identify the parenthesis mark as part of a
character string rather than a logic thing) when they were setting up
the search engine, but I can't remember what it was. For example,
searching for the character string <(love> doesn't give the results you
want - it gives zero hits.
So be creative - try to think of other words that are likely to be part
of the results you are hunting.
