Re: Re: HYB: Swingtown

SWINGTOWN has shown strongly different performance rhizome to rhizome this
past year.. Reset last summer I had several fans, all apparently equal more
or less when planted, and planted in apparently identical soil. They behaved
very differently one compared to another. By this spring one set had barely
survived, another didn't increase or grow, actually dwindling in size, with
three others increasing heavily and blooming with full sized stalks and plenty
of branching. I had not noticed this kind of variation before and I found it
puzzling. Since the planting was in new soil taken out of lawn I had expected
high fertility. That is not what I found. The ground was full of rocks which
I and my helpers heaped high in an area where I plan to make some rock paths.
Additionally there were some tree roots and some from a large, healthy Crepe
Myrtle nearby. It is possible the non-performing sets were competing with
these. Other than that I have no idea what might have caused such
differences.

Those of you who have had a problem with this variety might find it worth
while to try again. The quality of stalk and bloom and the attractive foliage
of the healthy sets adds up to a very satisfactory variety. Swingtown also
appears to be rather good as a parent.

Neil Mogensen z 7 in western NC where possible snow (!) is in the forecast
for this afternoon through tomorrow morning--very little accumulation
expected, however.
