That is indeed the photo I was thinking of.  Looks like a diploid of I. 
variegata and I. pallida ancestry to me, and indeed that could sort of 
plant could hale from the original home of I. varbossiana as well.  I need 
to research the name again, as my memory is getting fuzzy on the details. 
Seems to me that the Kohlein photo did not match the original description 
well, but that may not be true.

There is an alleged photo in Kohlein, p. 184. The caption reads  "Iris 
varbossiana probably is not a true species, but a stabilized form that was 
 often 
seen growing wild near castles and fortresses. This example is from the 
Botanical Gardens in Zagreb."
 
Yes, I know, that is a highly diffuse set of suppositions to be put  forth 

without further discussion or citations. Good  old Kohlein.
