That's more or less the temperature I thought I'd heard before. But I'm wondering if some of the selections from warmer climates (i.e., OZ & CA) stop growing at a higher temperature. Some of them aren't as tolerant of cold weather, & Margie's & Jan's posts about temperatures made me wonder if maybe they stop growing roots at a warmer temperature than the cultivars that do well here.
I checked soil temperature in some seedling pots in full sun yesterday, and it was about 10 degrees warmer than temps in pots of storeboughts. I think I am going to move the ones that haven't grown roots yet out into the open, cover with a double layer of floating row cover and see if that makes a difference for them. Leave it on all winter.
Totally off topic, but some of you have been interested - This year's crop of hand reared whooping crane babies are on their way south, following mama ultralight aircraft. There is a <wonderful> video of them being released from the travel pen, taking off after their "mama". Go to

Years ago (1970's) they did a study on Long Island. They reported then that roots continue to grow till the soil temperature drops below 45 degrees.
