Thanks for identifying that song, Christy. I was afraid Walter was going
to leave us twisting slowly in the wind. Now that we know what it is,
here is a version attributed to the Carter Family:
"I will twine and will mingle my raven black hair
With the roses so red and the lilies so fair
And the myrtle so green of an emerald hue
And the pale emanita and islip so blue . . ."
Another commentary says the Carters collected their songs from the areas
around their homes in Virginia and Tennessee, but western North Carolina
is part of the same cultural area.
I guess that's far enough OT for now.
Griff Crump, along the tidal Potomac near Mount Vernon, VA, where it's
rained so much for three days that I felt compelled to go out and see if
the seeds had floated out of their planting pans. (Not yet.)
