Dear Michael - you are right - more iris , less grass to mow was my motto
some 30 yrs ago -- butMORE weeding! Anyhow, one way not to get the borer, I
learned then from one of our mrmbers: "Don't give any to a neighbor who won't
take care of them as they should and you will get their borers. " That is SO
true - One very conscientious neighbor gave me all her irises about 10 yrs ago
when she moved which was VERY thoughtful. However others get them from other
sources which has happened -- Last year I transplanted my whole garden so I
could enjoy it this year - BUT the borer came in droves, decreasing their
devastation as they marched thru the garden, but ruined my Dykes collection
which was first in line. So I had to redo the garden this year, buying Dykes
to keep the collection, ruining the possible reblooming reboom -naturally my
lst love-- since they were all dug and held until another bed could be redug
in shifting everything around. I have close to 800 irtises nearly half are
rebloomers, so I have not been happy about this; I do realize we had a mild
winter - and I have tried not to spray --- but unless there is a magical wand
waved over the garden, I'm spraying next Spring! How's that for a horror
borer story! (I had only 3 rebloomers after such a late replanting: MOUSE,
AUTUMN MAPLE, and LADY EMMAand they had been in my garden last year, so were
not pepped up from coming from the West Coast which speaks well for them,
having been replanted in late August. Rosalie nr Baltimore and it has been
sunny, very dry, nr freezing at night, zone 7 -- ryfigge @aol.com
