Actually it is not as easy as it might seem. Through the 1959 Checklist,
things are workable though time consuming. The '49 and '39 checklists
are a completely different story. The formats are very different, bold
face and type fonts are used to designate different information and
cannot be easily scanned and converted. There are a whole host of
problems we have not even addressed yet (because we are still working on
correcting the scans of the '69. All this is being done by volunteers.
The '99 was the first checklist produced in electronic format, but still
needs to be formatted for the search engine. (otherwise it is just one
big text file) It won't be released for downloading until the costs of
the printed version are recovered. (because - guess why... because
someone would put it up on a website for anyone to get for free). Just
so you know, this is not my decision, it is one made by the AIS board.
No one knows what the impact on sales of the printed copy would be, and
the board is unwilling to risk losing that much money. If you don't like
the decision, let the board know.

Lets make sure we have the information correct here.
The AIS does not pay for any part of the National Conventions. The
people who attend the conventions pay for them thru the registration
fees. The sponsoring region assumes all the financial risk.
Nor do the AIS dues go to large growers.

Just for the fun of it, I did a quick check on the last four bulletins.
Out of a total of 496 pages there were 107 pages of advertising (numbers
approximate - count done quickly) hardly "mainly advertising."
If the content of the bulletin is not to your liking, write to Terry
Aitken and/or Bruce Filardi (the editor) and tell them what you would
like to see in it. Better yet write an article.

Most iris clubs have copies that you can have access to.

Part of the problem here is that most times an iris has to be in general
circulation before it is discovered to be a "rotter" (if there is such a
thing). First of all, a cv that rots in the hybridizer's garden is not
very likely to be registered or introduced (after all the hybridizer has
to be able to grow enough to sell). Secondly, most irises grow
differently in different areas. Some rot in some environments and not in
others. Lots of hybridizers send their seedlings to other hybridizers
and to the national conventions so they can be seen and grown in other
environments. I have gotten to know a fair number of hybridizers
personally, and I don't think a single one of them would intentionaly
sell an iris that they knew would rot away.

Well maybe we would get more free services if we paid 50% taxes like
most europeans.
The problem is if all information is given away free, the people who
create the information will stop creating. How about if we put it in context:
Doreen, you spend 2 years writing a book that the publishers tell you
will sell like hotcakes and you can retire to a villa in the south of
France. Two days ater the first copy hits the street, Rolf Geeko scans
all the significant data in it and puts it up on a website for anyone to
have for free. Sales of you book crash to zero. Poof go your plans for
the villa. You had another book project in mind, you going to continue
with it?
Books are a bad example you say? How about Napster and online music.

Well that is an opinion that I would not agree with and I've been in the
business for 25 years. That is not to say that there are not great
websites in Europe, or Asia for that matter.

Page 106 of the Jan 2002 Bulletin (every Jan bulletin I think) has the
previous years Income and Expense statement.
