Of the four plants of Iris unguicularis that I set out last winter,
three of them are still alive. These three have basically been sitting all
summer, and are now starting to show some new growth. I have the plants
situated on some higher ground under a tall Pine Tree. Here, during the
summer, they get direct sun in the morning and late afternoon/evening. The
Pine shades the plants at mid day. During the winter, when the sun angle
is lower, they get full sun all day.
I have three questions about the culture of this species.
1. When should I start fertilizing the Irises?
2. How often should Iris unguicularis be fertilized?
3. Since autumn is normally dry and sunny here, how much additional water
should I give this species when there is little if any rain?
