Anner - thanks for the detailed description of your plant covers. In a
climate like ours where the coldest night temperatures are under clear
skies and usually follow clear days, water filled cola bottles will help
keep it from getting as cold also.
All the mapping ideas are great - mine isn't very spectacular: all of my
planting areas have names and numbers like Front Yard Row [bed] 1, and
all of the plants are either diagrammed or listed in a consistant order
(e.g., "starting from the barn end", "starting next to the gate"). This
year, I added numbers to each of the planting locations to help find
things in the computer when the maps don't seem to match what's in the
ground (e.g, plants AND labels missing). This has been really helpful
out in the 'killing field' rows which have room for 50-80 plants each
and a high rate of turnover. Plants that sulk in the front yard beds
get moved to the killing field (where they sometimes perversely
fluorish) and odds and ends get stuck in vacancies and keeping track of
what's where has been a pain.
I like the idea of using different colored ink for different years.
That will be a help in figuring out my much smudged diagrams.
