John, it is likely that the first application you used applied the medicine, and the following treatments with the same leaf kept the skin emulsified.

Doubtful, I have used a cut aloe leaf for a day or two and it worked just as
effectively from the beginning to the end. Kept it wrapped and in the
refrigerator so it wouldn't dry out.
