Linda,
I have been sending guest irises to AIS conventions since 1977. No two
conventions do the same thing. Some convention guest iris chairs are very
communicative with the hybridizers, and others are not. There have been
times when I have sent guests off to a convention and not heard a word until it
was time to send the plants back. Some reported on only guests that had
died and requested replacements, but there was no report on the condition of
those that lived. Once I received a box of returned guest plants that were
unlabeled!
The last Denver convention was the first in memory to make a detailed chart
and to make periodic contact with the hybridizers about the condition of the
guests.
I think the AIS Convention Handbook has suggestions as to how to handle the
guest irises, but I don't think these are iron-clad rules.
The Fresno Convention has a nice format and is communicating with the
hybridizers. Here are some things written in my "health" column.
DEAD
POOR GROWTH
BLOOM OUT (This probably also means DEAD).
On some varieties that died in one garden, they showed five and six increases
in other convention gardens. Since soil conditions and skills vary, you can
expect this.
Let me add that St. Louis (2005) responded very quickly to the receipt of my
guests, and they, too, have a fine format.
Handling an AIS Convention is an awesome task, and I salute those who
accept the responsibility and stage a successful convention. The problems I
mentioned earlier are definitely exceptions to the fine conventions AIS has
had over the years.
