Dave mentions seasonality as a factor in PBF--I've noted that too.Thinking back to bloom time I suddenly realized that our PBF here in Stockton has been more charcoal than the shade of purple it was in partial shade in San Jose. ( our iris grow in an open field with no hint of shade) I think that there may be more than one pigment involved in PBF. Like all pigments I am sure its also affected by soil conditions and seasonality also
One thing to remember about the color is that it is an anthocyanin and will fade in the sun. Strongly PBF varieties will sometimes have the color bleached out by strong sunlight as the leaf areas bearing color emerge.
