Re: REF: copyright theft

It seems I have a knack for instigating controversy but I assure you it is out of a quest to learn and educate. I have worked towards more pictures in some sectional bulletins with success. I have been working towards pictures being submitted with registrations. I have been trying to create illustrated checklists. All in all, I am a very visual person. I applaud all the individuals that have shared pictures on Iris photos. I think most of us share what we have in the best ways we can, and with all the projects that I have worked on, I have found very few people unwilling to allow their photos to be used for good causes. But I think this spirit of sharing also goes to acknowledging the photographers. It seems very little to ask, that when some people copy photos or text, that they record as part of the file name, the source. Then if they would like to use it for the benefit of the Iris societies they might drop a note to the creator. Most people are delighted to allow their photo used
for a worthwhile purpose, and let me assure you a good photo requires some skill and thought to create. Just the effort to record it and share it is deserving of some acknowledgement. But everyone must also realize that not everything I draw or photograph is put out onto the web. I have many projects that I work on and I like to think that those projects will contain something new and fresh when they are finished. If people take anything you put out as free, without asking, than you can soon find yourself staring at your work on someone elses website without any credit to you. Personally I dont do websites. But for those that do, I would think it would be a great compliment if someone asked to use their material for some purpose, but I also think it would be a sad commentary if they used others work without consideration. A friend of mine just published a new horticultural book on another genus. He quoted another expert with suitable attribution but a typo left off the quotes.
Believe it or not the publisher received a lawsuit and settled out of court. I would like to think we are not that difficult, and that most of us would allow for honest mistakes. But we also have to realize that nothing is totally free.
