I think what Laurie was getting at was use of the photos by commercial iris
growers to make a profit. If you use something belonging to someone else,
without permission, to make a buck it is just plain unethical and illegal.
The least they deserve is to be compensated. Just about anyone who will
sell irises on a website or through a catalog knows better. (I only use
photos
on my website that were taken by myself or Mike Greenfield). The same thing
goes for graphics. For personal use, I doubt that anyone cares....the same
for club sales.
However, even for personal use, if you are creating a website or flyer, it
is
only proper to ask permission and give credit to the photographer.
This reminds me of the threads about people "rescuing" irises or other
plants from
"abandoned" property. Despite the condition/location of any such property,
it still
has an owner. Plants on the property are owned by that owner even if they
are beside
the road in plain sight. Removing the plants without permission is theft, or
at
the least misappropriation. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
