My potted Edith probably benefits from this approach. The bottom level of
soil in the pot is compacted and sterile. I often forget to give her
fertilizer, when I do it's a quick shot of Miracle Grow. When she gets crowded I dig
and simply add potting soil to bring it back to the level I want. Not saying
she would necessarily win any shows, but I keep her for my personal pleasure
and enjoyment.

Best Bet is currently in the garden, again. It's 'survived' since 2002 but
I thought it was gone in 2004. Dug out the spot and found two little pieces
smaller than my thumb. Got rid of the bad parts and just stuck the little
ones back. Now they are about half grown. We'll see what happens after this
rain.
