Thanks, Patrick, for your explanation.  I don't think I've ever seen this or
heard of it from any of my iris friends in this region.  Maybe there's a
virtue for iris growth in the extreme cold of a midwestern winter. At least I
shall tell myself that in mid-January, if my memory is thawed enough at that
point.
