Thanks Arnold,
I know that nothing will reverse the leaf spot damage but I'd hoped to be able to find out if this disease is bacterial or fungal in nature as my attempts to keep it from spreading every year seem to be in vain. So far I've tried Benomyl (benzimidazole fungicide), Green Light Fung-Away (benzimidazole fungicide), and Bordeaux solution (copper sulfate---advertised as "an outstanding fungicide and bactericide"). Char has mentioned a product I've not yet tried, Bayer Fungus Control, (thanks Char!) and I'm hoping some of the other more experienced Iris Talk growers have additional comments on what this disease might be (bacterial or fungal) and how I might deal with it.
I'd really appreciate suggestions about what to use in the early spring when the spots first begin to appear so that I don't have to be trimming off thousands of leaf tips by summer's end. I do cut my iris down to a height of about 1 1/2" after first frost, clean up all the leaves and debris, and burn it all. The borers would utterly wipe out my collection if I didn't do the fall cleanup.

Janet, whatever you use to treat, the spots, etc., will not go away. The
chemical used for treatment will just prevent spread by killing the fungi (or
bacteria, depending on the type of disease). You need to trim off the
diseased leaves and burn or dispose of them someplace where they won't infect
another iris.
Arnold
P.S. Soap/detergent never burned any foliage for me when I used it as
sticker/spreader.
