And some of the ones that summer (Aug) bloom for you (I think you've mentioned Sugar Blues & Returning Chameleon among others) don't start putting up stalks here, just one zone farther south, until late - right about average freeze date in mid October.
The temperature requirements for all these different genetic combinations remains baffling. Duration plus upper and lower requirements.
And probably has a lot to do with how well they've been able to grow in between spring and fall start up, related to all the mentioned effects on soil moisture.
I know you water, Betty, and from the mention of hoses, it sounds like you do too, Chuck. I usually only water when trying to get plants established, tho I did try to water a lot a few years ago to see if any of my newer seedlings in one part of the 'garden' might rebloom (no).
Dust is the norm, at least for the surface, when cultivating here from May thru October, with intermittent episodes of moisture. Mulch helps. Gravelly organic loam dries out fast at the surface.
