I'm sure I'm taking this thread into a slightly
different direction but let me add this...
In the seed industry, Tagetes erecta has long been
known as "African Marigold" but recently many breeders
have taken up the name "American Marigold" for this
species and its many strains. Based on its actual
origin, I'd say the latter was more appropriate. I'm
not sure where "African" ever came from.
Tagetes patula, the other common species of marigold
used for bedding in the U.S., is known as "French
Marigold". I'm sure there's a story behind this as
well but I don't know it off the top of my head.
