Maybe the tree doesn't attract birds because the seeds are covered with a
sticky mush under the skin of each berry. the seeds are also large and awkwardly
ridged which might make digestion difficult for most birds smaller than a crow
or magpie.
It is widely used a s a street tree here and does have a wonderful perfume,
however home owners complain about berry drop, footpath and paving mess and
sticky marks on the windscreens and bodywork of their new BMW's. Older trees are
susceptible to termite attacks if they are stressed and are hence regarded with
fear by home owners as a source of infestation.
