Sean,
I read your post on this and thought id reply. Since i live about
a half mile away from some of the last remaining coastal chapparral in
California, i thought i would put in my input. My Climate is usually
wet, wondy and cool in the winter. We generally get some frost but not
anything more than an annoyance. We have some of the foggiest summers
in california. I live in Marina which is close to Castroville, where
almost 90% of Americas artichokes are grown. Were exposed to wind
almost constantly. The beach is generally almost never free of wind.
THe soil here is very sandy. In fact we are situtated on the Former
Dunes. THere arent too many high hills around but the town is not
perfectly flat either. . There are remnants of the oak forest that used
to grow in parts of the city and these are in peoples yards mostly.
The soil tends tyo be slightly alkaline. It cannont support Azaleas at
all but Camellias can grow in it and only suffer slight Chlorosis. We
dont get much salt spray as the Dunes along the shore block the salt
spray. . THe town is also situated 40 feet above sea level. THis area
was a Potato farm in the 1800's so its great for that crop ( i myself
have grown a few potatoes).
We dont get very high temperatures throught the year. It s unusual for
us to go above the 80F mark any time of the year.As i said at the
beginnin Chapparal does very well here. Just outside of the city on
federal land you can see Mimulus aurantiacus ( Sp?) , Sand mat
Manzanita, Ceanothus, Quercus agrifolia, poison oak, native grasses,
Salvia mellifera, Artemesia californica. .
this is about all i can think of if theres anything i missed let me
know.
