grub: friend or foe?

Hi all,

While doing some casual weeding as the flower beds are just starting to head
into spring, found a grub of just under the surface - and have not been able
to identify it as a friend or foe?

It is about 3/4 of an inch long (2cm) about 3/16th of an inch (0.5cm)
diameter at one end and taper to point. Mostly a light brown color with
black tip and three black rings near midsection. Only found one near some
bedding plants.
