Moira - Re your comment
It (C. vitalba) has
undistingushed flowers and numerous typical light fluffy seeds and I
suspect it came in by mistake, as I can't really imagine anybody being
enthusiastic about growing it.
Well, they may not be precisely 'enthusiastic' about growing it (tho
in fact I know several people with large-scale wild-ish gardens who
happily let naturally occurring specimens stay)but certainly many
people, me among'em, have a fondness for the plant as an effective
part of our native flora - for instance, it covers the low scrub along
the cliff-top paths beside the Solway Firth here and is a splendid
sight when in flower.
But as we all know all too well from all too many examples, an
endearing part of flora A can rapidly become a noxious weed in flora
B.
