Yellow Star-Thistle is very common in Robert Sibley Regional Park in the East
Bay hills of the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
However, I was surprised to find Purple Star-Thistle (Centaurea calcitrapa) in
bloom in the park on a very foggy Saturday after Thanksgiving (November 27th for
non Pilgrim-centric cultures). When the park was first opened 15 years ago, I
covered the entire park repeatedly without seeing Purple Star-Thistle. But now
there at least two plants and maybe many more. Are others on this list seeing
Purple Star-Thistle appear in places where they haven't seen it before? Does
anyone have experience with eradicating this species?
