When dealing with any sick plant I agree that fertilizer is a no-no
until there are distinct signs of recovery in the form of new growth.
Very often when a plant is is poor health the roots are scarcely
operating and loading up the growing medium with extra fertilizer could
make the soil solution strong enough to stop them completely. It is much
the same as giving heavy meals to a human invalid.
