Dear Glenn - Araucaria. reading your note dated 13 Jan on Araucarias
various...
What can you (or anyone) tell me about Araucaria excelsa?
Here is what I have: We bought 8 specimen trees (all about 4-5 metres)
from a nursery in Spain. They were transported by truck, first to Pistoia,
Italy and then to ©stanbul, where, after a short acclimatisation period (4
months) they were planted into specially prepared beds inside. The
building is a glazed landscaped theme park approx 10,000 sq metres and
light levels are in excess of 22,000 lux. These 8 trees were planted in
April 1996. They have now grown a further +3 metres up & +2m diameter.
They are incredibly beautiful, majestic even, and I'm very proud of them.
But what do we know about their root systems? To what size can they be
expected to develop? - width as well as height, especially bearing in mind
they are completely cossetted - no wind, controlled temperature, regular
watering & washing... Eventually I will be forced to take even more
control over their growth and introduce some light bonsai techniques such
as root pruning & feeding, but I'd like to continue to let them go free as
long as possible so any information will be wellcome.
