Well, the only garden i know of that has California natives is the gardens
around California State University Monterey Bay. They have a mix of other
plants, mostly those that were there before, but theyve planted some
natives around the main campus area, and near the Watershed Institute (I
had a hand in planting parts of that garden). The gardens look more "wild"
around the watershed Institute. So it's not formal at all (well it's kind
of weedy, but it's more just to show visitors what kinds of plants you can
see in the back country). They also have a nursery there where they
propagate natives that they use to help restore some of the old fire roads
and eroded hillsides.
As for more formal gardens, you can find many around Monterey where all
the historic Adobes are. The Robert Louis Stevenson house has a nice
garden in the back of the building, and the Naval Post Graduate school
has a restored cactus and succulent garden (i believe some of the plants
were transplanted from the Sonoran desert in the 1800's). I dont know if
the Naval Post Graduate school has any California natives, but it's worth
a visit.
